Ahead of marking his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has made it clear that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: The Arteta Era

Arteta assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an cup win not long after. Yet, that first major trophy stands as his lone significant piece of silverware since succeeding Unai Emery.

“I can,” he stated when questioned about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things need to fall into place in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”

Saturday night brings the six-year milestone with a game facing Everton, the identical team Arsenal played immediately following his role was made public.

Present Challenges

As chasing Manchester City taking on West Ham in an earlier kick-off, Arsenal could be displaced the summit in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This comes even with Arteta managing a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

Arteta currently has a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required in the immediate future.

Earning the Right

Arteta elaborated, stressing the daily requirement to justify his role. “In my view a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you talk here, how you go into the dressing room, the signal you send.”

Arteta continued, expressing gratitude for the strong backing from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the players' commitment as paramount. “At the end, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and dedicate themselves to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal approaches the upcoming game managing a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been ruled out with a muscle problem that is anticipated to see him miss action for several weeks.

A Different Club

Despite the fitness woes and the high-stakes environment, Arteta believes the club's “priorities and messaging” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

Arteta highlighted the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the standard we operate at.”

He finished by saying, “This is a standard that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
