British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
