The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and title rival Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Brazilian Grand Prix. Norris, who took the title advantage from his teammate by a single point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, beat the Melbourne-born driver by 0.023 seconds. Earlier in the session, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair during the running before sprint qualifying due at the evening session. Max Verstappen, the other racer in realistic title contention, trailing 36 points Norris, ended up in P17 as his team followed a alternative strategy. Verstappen's team-mate the Japanese driver was the sole competitor to go off, albeit lightly, when he lost control at Turn Four soon after starting. The Japanese spun out over the exit kerbs before sliding over the run-off area, and was fortunate to avoid just a light touch of the fence. Ferrari's the seven-time champion also spun, at the final moments of the practice, rotating twice through the quick descending Mergulho corner leading to the last turn on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion ended the session in 19th, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc. The McLaren pair were far ahead of the remaining drivers, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber third fastest, over half a second off Piastri's best. Aston Martin's the Spanish driver was fourth quickest, with Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of Mercedes' Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
